Gordon Parks was one of the greatest photographers in the 20th century and was a humanitarian dedicated to social justice. He would be the first African American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines. Born Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks on November 30th, 1912, his father was a vegetable farmer and lived modestly but also experienced poverty. Parks faced discrimination as a child and attented a segregated school and was not allowed to participate in activities because of his race. At the age of 14 after his mother’s death, Gordon left home and lived with relatives before going off on his own and working odd jobs. At the age of 25, Parks purchased his first camera and was inspired by migrant workers in magazines. His early photographs would catch the attention of Marva and Joe Lewis who encouraged him to move to a larger city. In 1940, Gordon and his wife moved to Chicago and began to explore different subjects in Chicago. He became interested in the low income communities in Chicago’s south side. Parks would later go on to win a photography fellowship with FSA for his images of the inner city in 1941. When FSA would later disband, he would work for the Office of War Information and The Standard Oil Photography Project. Eventually, Gordon would become a photographer for Vogue and developed a style that would emphasize the looks of models in motion. He would then relocate to Harlem and earn a job as a photographer for LIFE, where he would work for 20 years and would post photographs of fashion, racial segregation, sports, poverty, and entertainment. He even took portraits of African American leaders, including Malcolm X. In 1969, Gordon would become the first African American to direct a major Hollywood film. This movie was called The Learning Tree, which was a project Parks started working on in 1962. Two years later, Parks would release a movie called Shaft which was one of the biggest box-office hits in 1971. He also directed Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and attempted to revive the Shaft series with Leadbelly in 1976, but was unsuccessful. After his failure in 1976, he would still make films for television, but would never work in Hollywood again. On March 7th, 2006, Gordon Parks died of cancer at the age of 93. He was buried in his hometown of Fort Scott, Kansas. Parks is forever remembered for his work in photography, which has inspired many.
