Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, born in 1831, was the first African-American female physician in the United States. She first worked as a nurse in Massachusetts between 1852 and 1860. Crumpler practiced medicine in Boston and Richmond, Virginia, primarily working with people who had limited access to medical care. She was accepted to New England Female Medical College and earned an M.D. in 1864. In 1883, Crumpler published a renowned book, which many believe is the first medical text written by an African-American author, called Book of Medical Discourses In Two Parts. She challenged the preconception that held back African Americans from pursuing careers in medicine and paved the way for diversity in the medical profession.
