February Is black History Month. To celebrate our nation’s diversity every friday this month we will profile one African American hero and their story:

Harriet Tubman was born in the year 1820. She escaped slavery in 1849 to become a leading abolitionist.  It is estimated that she led over one thousand enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad, and through daring raid missions during the war.  Astonishingly, Tubman never lost a single person during these escapes. She was clever, determined, and courageous in this most dangerous yet pressing work rising to the mythical status of “Mother Moses” leading her people into freedom.  During the Civil War Tubman aided the Union Army working as a scout, nurse, and spy.  After the war she helped poor slaves and the elderly, always giving of herself in the aid of others.  Harriet Tubman passed away on March 10th, 1913.  To honor her life and accomplishments, in 2016, the U.S, Treasury Department announced that Tubman will be the new face on the 20 dollar bill.
