The West Bridgewater Debate Team finished up their season with round 9 this past wednesday. The team had a hard fought round across the board but scored high speaker points and debated admirably.

Gina Valante and Kaytlyn Lockwood fought hard with a strong plan, while Chris Nenopoulos and Elise Puliafico sought redemption and reconciliation while scoring speaker points so great you’d almost want to scream it over the intercom. Finally, Jillian Cockcroft and Kate Remy debated a novel and thoughtful plan as complimentary debaters. Special shout out to Kate who put a stop to an overly chatty Negative! Mr. Ennis would like to thank the whole team for a wonderful season and applaud their hard work, efforts and wins during the first ever fully online debate season. Additionally, congratulations to Seniors Chris Nenopoulos, Elise Puliafico, Jillian Cockcroft and Kate Remy for some solid performances throughout their final season.

Also thanks to Mr. Corbett, Mrs. Pistorino and Mrs. Larkin for giving their time to judge.

Debate team members please look for an announcement on classroom from Mr. Ennis regarding the end of the season meeting and any one interested in joining next year keep an ear out for an announcement about an interest meeting later this spring.

February is Black History Month and to celebrate our Nation's diversity, Bryanna is here to help us recognize not just one but several historical figures. <cut to Bryanna>

Black contribution to history is often forgotten or erased in the history books. This is why it is important to recognize the many achievements of black Americans whenever we can. Many black artists were crucial in the development of music during the 20th century. Regardless of your opinion of jazz itself, we all owe a debt to its creators, as the foundations of modern music are built on its back. Rock n’ roll, R&B and soul all have their roots in the genre, so if you’ve listened to and enjoyed any mainstream music since the 1950s, chances are you have jazz to thank. Jazz grew from a distinctively African American sensibility. In the aftermath of slavery, large black communities existed across America with their own heritage and influences. Jazz is completely unique in its focus on improvisation, allowing for unprecedented freedom of expression through music. One famous black jazz artist is MIles Davis, a jazz player who began playing the trumpet at 13. Davis went on to win several Grammys and created several best-selling albums. A notable jazz musician, Duke Ellington is often described as the most famous and charming of jazz players and he was highly praised for making jazz an art form. Not only was he one of the most recognized bandleaders, but he was a hugely popular pianist and composer. Jazz is vibrant, and a living art form and even today, people continue to express themselves through this genre. Black jazz artists changed the face of music as we know it, and during the month of February we  should celebrate and acknowledge the fact. Happy Black History Month!
