MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS

2/4/22

Carter G. Woodson, the creator of what we now call Black History Month, strived to place African American historical contributions front and center in both the study and understanding of American history. In honor of Black History Month we will celebrate the lives, accomplishments and contributions of black individuals throughout American History.

In honor of Black History month, today I will be talking about Marie Maynard Daly. She was the first African American woman in America to obtain a PhD in chemistry. Her love for science was inspired by her father and strongly supported. Daly went to Queen college after high school and graduated in 1942 and went on to pursue her graduate studies at New York University. She then enrolled into The Columbia University doctoral program. After graduating she worked at Harvard for two years and then was elected as a grant for the American Cancer society where she would work for several years. Daly was known for her research on sugars, proteins, and cholesterol. She also committed to developing programs for minority students to attend graduate schools for science and medical school. Her last stop in science was at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she would work there until her retirement twenty six years later in 1986. Sadly, on October 28, 2003 at the age of 82 of cancer.
