Saving or protecting endangered species is a critical concern in the world today. There are over 14,000 endangered and critically endangered species of animals and sadly scientists do not have the resources to save them all. So how do they decide which species they should dedicate their limited resources to? They use a method called Conservation Triage. Like medical triage, conservation scientists look to see which species really need help and can be saved. They then put the resources towards helping these species instead of the ones with more stable populations, or the ones with the smallest chance for success. For example, there are only around 28 Hainian Gibbons left in the world. Meanwhile, there are around 6,000 snow leopards, and about 880 mountain gorillas. If conservation scientists had to choose which of these species to help, they may choose the gorillas as they are in more need of the help than the snow leopards and have a better chance of success than the Hainian Gibbons. While it is devastating that we cannot save them all, Conservation Triage allows scientists to effectively use their resources, saving the most species possible with the limited tools at their disposal.
