Do you really know how much pollution is happening to our Earth every single year? Pollution can occur in air, on land, and in our waters. Water pollution can happen through misplacement of trash, untreated sewage, or industrial waste, which is estimated to be dumped into U.S. waters at a rate of 1.2 trillion gallons per year. Over 1 million seabirds, and 100,000 sea mammals, are killed by pollution every year. So what can we do? Last year only about 9% of plastic waste was recycled, so pushing for plastic recycling within homes, business, and right here at our school can really prevent these issues from getting worse.

\r\n

Air pollution can also be extremely detrimental to human health and the earth as a whole. The majority of air pollution comes from fossil fuel use: gasoline in cars, and coal and natural gas for electricity generation. Fossil fuels are the root cause of smog, acid rain, and most importantly global warming.  Burning any fossil fuel releases carbon dioxide which, in turn, raises earth’s temperature. In the past 50 years, progress has been made thanks to laws like the Clean Air Act and the Paris Climate Accords, but a lot of work still needs to be done. We can help first hand through using public transportation and switching to green energies.
