\r\n

Attention students of the middle-senior High School - If you have been following the news out of Ukraine you know there are some 3 million refugees that have fled the country in response to Russia’s invasion. This number is expected to rise up to 5 million and has already created a serious Humanitarian crisis.

\r\n

The majority of refugees fleeing Ukraine for neighboring countries are women and children. Many of those displaced individuals are fleeing to Poland, which is home to the region’s largest Ukrainian community and is the easiest EU country to reach from Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.

\r\n

Most have been forced to leave the majority of their possessions behind as they seek safety from the conflict. With the overwhelming traffic of people fleeing Ukraine, immediate relief is needed on the ground to support Ukrainian refugees, from hygiene kits and thermal blankets, to emergency cash assistance to help families resettle away from their homes.

\r\n

The Global Citizens Club is looking for your help! Starting Thursday representatives from the club will be coming around during powerblock to collect donations to CORE Recovery, a relief organization that is on the ground in Poland and Romania working with international and local partners to support the immediate needs of people fleeing war in Ukraine. They are focusing on providing cash assistance to help families get access to life-saving items, such as food, water, and safe transit to shelter. Additionally, they are focused on distributing hygiene kits with soap, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, and other essential hygiene items, as well as emergency thermal blankets to keep refugees warm amid freezing temperatures. \r\nFor more information check out the poster in the Orange Commons!\r\nThe money Global Citizens collects will go directly to this CORE Relief to support Ukrainian refugees. Being a WB citizen means being a global citizen, please consider helping support those impacted by this crisis in whatever way you can, every donation matters!\r\n

\r\n

<Women in History> Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. She is the oldest of three children and while growing up in Pakistan, her father insisted she have the same opportunities that boy children have. Malala was passionate about knowledge from a young age and would often visit her father’s classes as a child. However at the age of ten, Taliban took over the Swat Valley, which would cause girls to no longer be able to attend school, owning a TV, playing music and dancing. Girl’s education would be targeted the most as more than 400 schools were destroyed. At the age of 11, she stood up to the Taliban. Her and her father campaigned for Pakistani girls to have free quality education. Malala would get a lot of praise for her activism, but also became a target by the Taliban and she and her family were even forced to leave their house. On October 9, 2012, Malala was on the bus returning from school when she was shot by two members of the Taliban. Fortunately she suffered no brain damage, but the left side of her face was paraylized and she would have to undergo months of surgery and rehabilitation. She was then released from hospital to her parents in Birmingham, England where she would later attend school. She would still continue to fight for every girl to go to school and spoke at the United Nations in New York on her sixteenth birthday. That same year, she would release her autobiography “I am Malala”. One year later, she and her father established the Malala Fund to support women and girls internationally. She would also win a Nobel Peace Prize for her work in December 2014. The Malala fund advocates for quality education for all females, works with global leaders and local advocates, and funds education projects internationally. Malala graduated in November 2021 from the University of Oxford with a economics, political, and philosophy degree.
